What is a Lumbar disc herniation?
A lumbar hernia (often called a lumbar disc herniation or herniated disc) occurs when the soft, gel-like centre of a spinal disc in your lower back (the lumbar spine) pushes out through a tear in the disc’s tough outer layer. This bulge can put pressure on nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in your lower back and legs.
The lumbar spine (lower back) is especially prone to this because it bears much of your body’s weight and is involved in nearly all movements, from bending to lifting.
Causes and Symptoms
✅ Ageing & Disc Degeneration – Natural wear and tear over time weakens the discs, making them more prone to herniation.
✅ Repetitive Strain & Poor Posture – Frequent bending, lifting, or twisting motions (especially with poor posture) can strain the spine.
✅ Sudden Injury – A fall or accident can cause the disc to bulge or rupture.
✅ Genetics – Family history can increase the likelihood of disc problems.
✅ Being Overweight – Excess weight puts extra pressure on the spine.
Symptoms:
✅ Lower Back Pain – Often sharp or burning, and may get worse with movement.
✅ Pain Radiating to Legs – Known as sciatica, pain can travel down the buttock, thigh, and even to the foot.
✅ Numbness or Tingling – In the leg or foot, often following the path of the sciatic nerve.
✅ Muscle Weakness – Can affect walking or standing.
✅ Pain Worsened by Sitting, Bending, or Lifting – Certain positions or movements may trigger or worsen symptoms.
